Why Expressive Arts for Kids?

Updated: 2 days ago

We’ve all heard that taking a leisurely stroll is good for us—good for our physical health and good for our emotional health too. Well, engaging in expressive arts is just like that, especially for kids—it’s good for their health!

To help unpack what ‘expressive arts’ is, simply think of it as a creative way to categorize purposeful activity, particularly in children. Whether it's dance classes, mindfulness activities, or creative arts programs in schools, these activities provide more than just fun—they're vital for kids' development.

But let’s be real, not every child is eager to go on a daily walk or engage in structured activities that feel like chores. That’s where expressive arts come in as the ‘good for your health’ alternative, especially for kids. It’s been around forever, but only recently is it being recognized as an essential part of a child’s well-being—and it’s taking off in a big way.

When children participate in activities they genuinely enjoy—not because they’re necessarily highly skilled at them, but simply for fun—they are less likely to experience stress, low mood, or depression. This is especially true for kids who attend our dance and mindfulness classes in Brisbane, which are designed to be both engaging and beneficial for their mental health.

Scientific research has focused on the positive relationship between leisure activities and mental health, showing that kids who engage with expressive arts regularly also see the following benefits:

  • Better mood,

  • Reduced levels of stress,

  • Greater resilience,

  • Higher sense of purpose,

  • Increased alertness,

  • Better social connections,

  • Increased productivity,

  • And a greater sense of fun!

It’s easy to see why the number of expressive arts programs for kids is growing so rapidly, we are seeing that in Brisbane, especially in schools.
